Beyond Our Fate- part 1
Author’s Note
The Origin of My Story
In the year 2023, my life was set on a completely different path. I had planned to pursue my MBA abroad, and for nearly a month, I worked silently toward that dream—researching universities, preparing documents, and taking guidance from overseas education agencies in Chennai.
Having completed my UG from Women’s Christian College, I never imagined that my postgraduate journey would lead me to Panimalar Engineering College. Fate, however, always writes its own script. you don't really know what I mean; Chennaiites knew.
Studying abroad is not a simple decision, especially for a girl from a middle-class Indian family. When I finally opened up to my parents about my plans, they were surprised. They thought I wasn’t serious until I spoke about taking an educational loan. That was the moment reality struck my mother.
Like many Indian mothers, she feared that if I went abroad, I might adopt a different lifestyle, settle there, and eventually refuse marriage. She believed I had another plan hidden behind this dream. She then said something that still echoes in my mind:
“We have saved money for your marriage, not for your higher studies.” that was harsh truth indeed
The UK economy wasn’t promising at the end of 2023. My uncle even contacted a family friend living there, who described the struggles he faced overseas. Slowly, every thread of support began to loosen—and with it, the dream I once held so tightly.
What followed was yet another twist.
As I prepared for my studies abroad, my mother brought up marriage—this time with a man settled overseas. I rejected it without hesitation. I wasn’t ready for marriage. I was ready for a degree, not a groom.
I looked at IIDE Mumbai, but the fee structure was far beyond my comfort zone, especially for a field—digital marketing—I already had some experience in. So, I took a different path.
I appeared for TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test) and prepared on my own for three months. I scored 71%—not a genius, just an above-average girl chasing her ambitions.
I shortlisted a few colleges, and eventually, Panimalar Engineering College became my destination. People warned me:
-
Strict dress code
-
High discipline
-
Opposite-gender interaction almost forbidden
For an MBA student, where networking, communication, and perspectives shape your future, this seemed like stepping into a cage.
But life loves irony.
The place everyone feared for me became the place that shaped me.
